An indefinite curfew has been imposed in three districts in India's northeastern state of Manipur as violence escalates afresh. An all-out curfew has been announced in Imphal West, Imphal East and Thoubal districts from 11 am today, Tuesday (September 10). Section 144 was imposed in these three districts of Manipur just a day after students protested to restore peace in the state.
The situation in Manipur has heated up once again due to violent clashes.
An alarming situation has arisen in the past few days due to multiple incidents including exchange of fire, bomb blasts, attacks by drones and missiles, deaths of civilians, attempts to loot weapons from the armory of two battalions of Manipur Rifles. A large number of police and joint forces have been deployed to handle the situation.
As per the order, strict restrictions have been imposed on the movement of residents outside their residences during the curfew. Curfew was initially relaxed from morning to 10 pm on September 10.
But as the situation worsened later, it was strictly enforced again from 11 am.
Among those under the ban, only those associated with emergency services are allowed to move. These include health workers, electricity and drinking water service workers, press and electronic media, and court employees.
Meanwhile, many people protested questioning the role of the administration in restoring peace.
A large number of women took to the streets in Imphal on Sunday night. Besides restoring peace in the state, they demanded the resignation of Chief Minister N Biren Singh.
In this situation, the Chief Minister of the state held a meeting with the Governor. The Chief Minister said that the administration is trying to deal with the situation in Manipur. The BJP government in his state stands by the family members affected by the recent violent clashes.
He also handed over compensation money to the family of a deceased person.
Manipur Police Officer K Khabib (IGP, Intelligence) said, “Due to recent incidents of violence in the state, Manipur Police has taken some steps with joint forces. Our senior officers are at the district headquarters and are monitoring the situation.
The attack was reportedly carried out with the help of drones. The police suspect that the armed group that attacked belonged to the Kuki sect. Since then there have been attacks in several parts of the state and there have been alleged clashes between the Kuki and Meitei communities. Members of armed groups of the Kuki community also allegedly clashed with the police.
In recent times, questions have been raised about who is supplying the high-tech missiles and drones being used in the attacks. Amid growing unrest, Manipur's director of school education has ordered the closure of all schools in the state on September 9 and 10 to prevent further violence.
