A total of 97 people, including ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and members of the law enforcement agencies, have been cancelled for their involvement in the disappearances and the July-August massacre during the Awami League government. Of these, 75 were involved in the massacre during the July Revolution and 22 were involved in the disappearances.
This information was given by the Deputy Press Secretary of the Chief Advisor, Abul Kalam Azad Majumdar, at a press conference at the Foreign Service Academy in the capital on Tuesday evening.
He said that the diplomatic passport or red passport of ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has been cancelled. This has also been informed to India. India has informed that a travel pass will be issued for Sheikh Hasina.
Regarding e-passport, the Deputy Press Secretary said that Bangladeshis residing abroad like the country will receive SMS on their mobile phones from Wednesday. He said, the SMS service will be launched for expatriates for obtaining passports. We think that this will reduce harassment. This is for e-passport. Due to administrative complications, around 197,000 expatriates were waiting to print their Machine Readable Passports (MRPs). In the last three weeks, 182,745 passports have been delivered to various embassies. These will be distributed soon.
Stating that various initiatives are underway to make it easier to get passports in Bangladesh, Azad Majumder said that the government is working sincerely to make the passport office free from brokers. Many people fill out passport application forms online from shops around the passport office due to lack of knowledge. Broker circles have developed around these shops. This creates difficulties for service seekers. To overcome this problem, agents will be appointed through outsourcing. Who will help the applicants. The passport office believes that this will reduce the broker circle.
On the question of passports not being issued because the birth certificates of the parents of the children are not online, Azad Majumder said that the issue of this problem will be brought to the attention of the passport office.
When asked about the removal of police verification on passports, the Chief Advisor's Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam said, the main purpose of this is to verify Bangladeshi nationality. Because many times it is seen that Rohingyas are taking Bangladeshi passports. The matter is verified through police verification. In some cases, it is seen that someone who is not a Bangladeshi citizen is applying for a passport. To verify citizenship, one has to go through police verification. Although it is uncomfortable for many, some problems arise. Many people become victims of extortion through this. In reality, police verification has to be done for national security issues.
