Former Home Minister Babar got bail in 4 cases

Former Home Minister Lutfuzzaman Babar got bail in four cases filed in the Sylhet Speedy Trial Tribunal.

Sylhet's speedy trial tribunal judge Swapan Kumar Sarkar granted his bail on Wednesday (September 11).

Lutfuzzaman Babar got bail in four cases including former finance minister Shah AMS Kibria murder case, former railway minister Suranjit Sengupta attempted murder case and two cases under the Explosives Act.

PP Sarwar Ahmed Chowdhury Abdal of the tribunal confirmed on Thursday. Abdal said, "If the defendant applies for bail, we oppose it." But the learned Court granted bail.

Babar's lawyer Shahiduzzaman Chowdhury said that there were four cases against Lutfuzzaman Babar in Sylhet. After the hearing, he got bail in those four cases. There are several other cases against him. Some of which have been decorated. He is currently in Kashimpur Jail. He is physically ill.

Sylhet Speedy Trial Tribunal Bench Assistant Zainal Abdeen said that on September 4, the lawyer applied for the bail hearing of former state minister for home Lutfuzzaman Babar. Later, the court judge fixed the date of bail hearing on September 11.

Incidentally, on January 27, 2005, former finance minister Shah AMS Kibria was killed in a grenade attack at a public meeting in Baidya market of Habiganj Sadar upazila. In this incident, a case was filed against several central leaders of BNP including the then State Minister for Home Affairs Lutfuzzaman Babar, former mayor of Sylhet City Ariful Haque Chowdhury.

Earlier, on June 21, 2004, there was a bomb attack on a political rally in Dirai, Sunamganj. Late Suranjit Sengupta was addressing the gathering as the chief guest. One Jubo League worker was killed and 29 others were injured in that bomb attack. In that incident, SI Helal Uddin filed a case at Dirai police station as the plaintiff. After a long investigation, the police filed a charge sheet against 11 accused including Babar-Ariful-Gauch.

Lutfuzzaman Babar was elected Member of Parliament thrice from Netrakona-4 (Madan, Mohanganj, Khaliajuri) Constituency. In 2001, he served as the Minister of State for Home Affairs during the BNP-Jamaat coalition government. He was then arrested in 2007 during the military-backed caretaker government.

Meanwhile, during the Awami League government in 2004, he was sentenced to death in the August 21 grenade attack and Chittagong 10 truck weapons case. There are several other cases against Lutfuzzaman Babar. He has been in jail since his arrest.
