IMF may give $3 billion: Finance Advisor

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) can provide an additional 300 million (three billion) dollars of budget support to Bangladesh, said Finance Advisor Dr. Salehuddin Ahmed.

He told reporters at the Bangladesh Secretariat on Sunday, "The IMF has asked whether the interim government has planned to reform the terms of the 4.7 billion dollar loan." I have assured them that the implementation of that loan has already started and we will never fail. Responding to the IMF's concerns, the advisor said that besides reforming the government, there are also plans to increase the tax-GDP ratio.

He said that the country's budget has shown a positive attitude towards lending another three billion dollars to the IMF. The issue will be discussed with the IMF's managing director at the IMF board meeting to be held in Washington in October. The finance adviser said that the IMF's review mission will be conducted in Bangladesh in September.

Advisor Dr. in response to another question. Salehuddin said, 'Ruppur nuclear power plant project will continue.

However, Bangladesh requested Russia to extend the loan repayment period by two more years. The Russian ambassador assigned to Bangladesh has taken a very positive attitude in this regard. The financial adviser also said that the Russian ambassador was concerned about the continuation of the Rooppur project and the repayment of the loan. They have been assured of regular loan repayments.

Earlier last Thursday, IMF's Bangladesh chief Papagiorgiou and the organization's resident representative Jayendu Dey held an online meeting with the Finance Adviser.
