Human chain demanding cancellation of prepaid meters in Rangpur

General consumers have formed a human chain in Rangpur against the connection of prepaid meters without public hearing and publicity. They warned that prepaid meters will be removed and old meters installed within the next 24 hours.

The human chain was organized at Shapla Chattar in the city on Thursday.

The speakers said that consumers are being harassed by installing prepaid electricity meters without reason. Electricity office officials have started looting by installing prepaid meters instead of providing services to customers. Even though the power line is off, money is deducted from the meter. Moreover, they have faced the trouble of purchasing cards several times and suddenly the meter gets locked and the power supply stops. When these prepaid meters get locked, they do not get a solution even after repeatedly protesting to the electricity office officials.

Earlier, a human chain was also held in front of the NESCO head office on College Road in the city under the banner of the Electricity Consumer Interest Protection Committee. Meanwhile, a memorandum was submitted to the NESCO Chief Engineer on December 17. At that time, it was announced that a public hearing would be held in the first week of January, but unfortunately, the connections have already been established. They are paving the way for new loot by keeping the customers in suspense.

NESCO Rangpur Circle 1 Supervising Engineer Hasnat Zaman said that a public hearing will be held soon. The matter has been informed to the district coordination meeting, divisional commissioner and city corporation. There are good aspects of prepaid meters, but many may not know the matter well. Due to which there is negative discussion at the customer level. When the matter is clear, there will be no more negative discussion. At this time, he sought the cooperation of all levels of people, including journalists.

It is worth noting that prepaid meter connections were officially started on December 22 in Rangpur city under NESCO Power Distribution Division 3. Connections have also started in other distribution divisions of Rangpur. There has been mixed reaction among customers due to the limited range of connections.
