All garment factories to remain open from Sunday: Industry Advisory

All garment factories in the country will be open from Sunday (September 15), Interim Government's Industrial Adviser Adilur Rahman Khan said.

He said this at a discussion meeting on the ongoing crisis and the way forward in BGMEA garment factories on Saturday afternoon.

Adviser Adilur Rahman said that the government will take special measures if there is unrest in any factory. If someone tries to close the factory to endanger the country's economy, that will also be remembered.

The advisor said, instability in the garment industry is not desired by any of the owner workers. A third party will take advantage of the conflict situation in the garment industry. None of the owners and workers will benefit from this.

BGMEA President Khandaker Rafiqul Islam expressed a slightly different opinion and said that all garment factories will be open tomorrow as the government has assured security. However, if there is unrest in a factory, that factory will be closed for an indefinite period as per section 13/1 (no work, no pay) of the Labor Act from the next day.

Labor adviser Asif Mahmud Sajib Bhuiyan said that due to the creation of a democratic environment in the country, the workers are speaking for themselves like many others. A labor committee has been constituted to resolve the grievances of the workers. They have started working on all complaints and demands. However, it is not that there is no conspiracy in the labor movement.

The labor adviser also said that the government has already started working on the process of introducing rationing system for the workers. Apart from this, the process of withdrawing the cases which were filed during the workers' wage hike movement at the end of last year has started.

However, Asif Mahmud said that strict action will be taken against those who go beyond these processes and create unrest. He said that no discount will be given in this case.

The meeting was also attended by Farida Akhtar, Advisor to the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock, Asif Mahmud Sajeeb Bhuiyan, Advisor to the Ministry of Labor and Employment, along with entrepreneurs of the garment industry.
