A discrepancy has been found in the money in the vault of the private sector BRAC Bank. The bank's Cox's Bazar Chakaria branch vault is missing 82 lakh 44 thousand taka. Bangladesh Bank has directed to take legal action against those involved. The bank said that legal action has already been taken against the officer involved and some money has been recovered.
On December 22, Bangladesh Bank inspected the bank's Cox's Bazar Chakaria branch. During the inspection, a difference of 82 lakh 44 thousand taka was found between the amount of cash kept in the vault after the bank's accounts were closed on December 19, which the inspection team described as a serious irregularity.
In a letter sent to the chairman of the bank, Bangladesh Bank said that necessary measures have been taken to resolve the discrepancy and legal action against the responsible persons and informed Bangladesh Bank within 10 days.
When asked about this, BRAC Bank Managing Director (MD) and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Salim RF Hossain told Amar Desh, "The person involved in this incident has been handed over to the police. Tk 4.7 million has been recovered from him."
The bank's Head of Communication Ikram Kabir told Amar Desh, "One of our officials is involved. He has been legally handed over to the police. Tk 4.7 million has been recovered from him as soon as the incident was reported. The process of further recovery is underway. All of this money will be returned. No money will be lost."
It is worth noting that this is not a new incident of missing money from the bank's vault. This has happened before. In most cases, bank officials are involved. Recently, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) filed a case against Jhantu Lal Das, the cashier of the bank's Moulvibazar branch, on charges of embezzling Tk 2.833 million from the vault of Agrani Bank.
