Trump proposes Canada as a US state

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced his resignation on Monday. He made the announcement at a press conference in Ottawa at 10 am local time. Just hours after his announcement, newly elected US President Donald Trump proposed making Canada the 51st state of the United States.

Donald Trump posted this message on his social media account 'Truth Social' on Tuesday local time. There, he wrote, if Canada were to merge with the United States, they would no longer have to pay any tariffs. Taxes would be greatly reduced, the country would be safe from the threat of Chinese and Russian ships circling around Canada. Canada would become a great nation if we were together.

Trump also wrote, many people in Canada are interested in being part of the 51st state of the United States. To sustain Canada, the United States has to pay huge trade deficits and subsidies. They will no longer bear that burden. Justin Trudeau knew this and that is why he resigned.

Analysts believe that Trump played a major role in Trudeau's low popularity and eventual decision to resign.

With Trudeau's resignation, the Liberal Party is scheduled to hold an emergency meeting on Wednesday to select a new leader. However, Justin Trudeau will continue to serve as both party leader and prime minister until a new leader is chosen.
